April 2nd, 2:55 AM, on the loading dock behind the Marchand Building, in rain that had been coming down since Sunday. They did not scrap it. They wheeled it out through the freight door and left it against the wall beside the roller shutter, facing the yard, and there it has stood for two weeks with its cord still trailing across the asphalt and the plug still lying where it fell. The crack in the lower right of the glass, which was the size of a thumbnail in October, is now a full star: twelve radiating lines and four concentric rings, a rose window, drawn by frost and one careless dolly wheel. The single gooseneck lamp on the dock wall throws a warm and grudging light from the left, catches the wet edge of the concrete lip, and abandons everything else to the weather. Rain is running down the face of the glass in the same vertical threads the condensation made in February, which the viewer may take as a rhyme, because I intended it as one. Inside, on the second shelf, the blue package is still hanging at its angle. Nine stations. It has not fallen yet.
