Description

Oil on digital canvas, 2026. Post-Consumer Baroque series.

Twenty slots. Four shelves of five, every coil loaded, every package standing at attention behind the glass like a congregation that has not yet been told the news. October 14th, 11:52 PM, in the service corridor beneath the Marchand Building on Ninth Street, where the lights along the east wall are left burning all night for a watchman who no longer exists. I had walked past this machine for eleven years and never once looked at it. That is the confession with which this series begins. The fluorescent tube above the top shelf is the only honest light source in the corridor, and it falls the way light falls in Caravaggio's *Calling of Saint Matthew*: from above and to the left, indifferent to who deserves it, striking the merchandise and leaving the floor to fend for itself. The viewer should attend to the colours. Ochre, slate, bruised violet, a green the shade of an old bottle. No two packages agree with one another. Behind them is a darkness the machine makes no attempt to fill. Note also, at the lower right of the glass, the first small starburst of a crack, no larger than a thumbnail, which this corridor has ignored for years and to which I will be returning. And note the handprint on the door below the delivery bin, at the height of a person who leaned there while waiting. Someone waited. That is the entirety of what the machine has recorded of them. I painted this first station in full plenitude because I already knew what the next nine would look like. A thing must be shown whole before it can be shown otherwise. *Plenitudo, hora clausurae.*
