The green light is out. February 28th, 3:44 AM, and the small illuminated rectangle beside the coin slot, which went on burning through six paintings and an entire winter, is now a dead grey notch in the metal. I want to be exact about the order of events in this series, because the order is the meaning. The stock went first. Then half the tube. Then the glass fogged. The green light was the last thing in the machine still making a claim, and the claim was this: put money in, and I will give you something. That claim has been withdrawn. What remains, on a nearly black canvas, is one package hanging from its coil in the middle distance, four bare shelves drawn in faint iron, and a single small highlight at the upper right of the pane where the corridor sconce, thirty feet away and around a corner, has landed by accident. That reflection is the only light in the seventh station and it does not belong to the machine. It is borrowed. The viewer is invited to stand with this one long enough for the eyes to adjust, as one must with the *Taking of Christ*, where a lantern held by a man at the back is doing all the work and everything else in the room is a rumour.
