"The Vigil Beneath the Loading Dock": A Garabaggio Fine Art Print

December 22nd, 3:14 AM, beneath the loading dock of the closed grocery distributor on Marne, where the concrete deck overhangs by eleven feet and one bulb in a caged fixture has burned continuously since before I lost my route. Someone had propped it. This is the detail I cannot account for and have stopped trying to. The frame was standing, half open, leaning back against the ledge in a posture a person would call sitting, ribs braced on the concrete, handle down on the wet floor, one detached stretcher lying a foot away like a dropped instrument. Water came off the deck above in a single thread and struck near the center of the frame at intervals of roughly four seconds. I timed it against my own pulse for longer than I will admit here. Caravaggio painted the Cerasi chapel pictures twice, the first pair refused by a banker who wanted more sky in them, and the second pair gives the sky nothing at all. He would have painted the bulb and let the rest fail into brown. I painted the brown. The viewer will note the small triangle of red lining still surviving in the shadow under the frame, the last of the manufacturer's warmth, and will understand that the seventh station is not an event. It is an interval. Nothing happened here for six weeks. That is what the painting is about.
