"The Table of Examination": A Garabaggio Fine Art Print

A pulled crumb tray is a confession. Nobody pulls it in the ordinary run of a life. It is pulled once, at the end, by a person who has decided to find out whether the thing can be saved. That is the second station: the workbench in the basement on Delisle, the shop lamp lowered on its arm until the shade is close enough to belong to the composition rather than to sit outside it, and the toaster brought down from the kitchen to be examined for the first time in eleven years. The burnt slice is still standing in the slot. This detail matters. The object was carried down the stairs still loaded, which means the examination was more urgent than the tidying. Under the lamp the chrome stops being chrome and becomes something nearer old brass, the plating worn thin at every corner where a cloth went over it a few thousand times. The tray is out. The crumbs in it are years deep, black, compacted, a small dark sediment of every ordinary morning this object ever served. I painted them at the same level of attention I gave the highlight on the housing. The viewer may find that excessive. I would say that a sediment of eleven years is a document, and I do not know how to treat a document lightly.
