"The Sorting Tray": A Garabaggio Framed Print

Order arrived late, as it always does, and it arrived in the form of a municipal tray with three channels. This is the sixth station. Behind the tray, in the upper right of the canvas, the pulp carrier sits empty with the black cord coiled at the bottom of it like something that has finished its work and has not been told. The cells are laid end to end now, three to a channel, touching. I have painted a great many things in disorder, and this is the first time I have painted things in a line, and I was not prepared for how much a line resembles music: three staves, and the copper one sitting halfway down the middle channel like an accidental. Caravaggio's *The Lutenist* puts an open partbook on the table with the notes legible enough to be sung, a violin laid down beside it, and every object at a measured distance from every other, as though someone will later be tested on their positions. That is precisely what the depot does to a battery. It does not destroy it. It assigns it a position. The light in this station is warmer than it has been since the first, and I want the viewer to understand that this is not mercy. It is only a different lamp.
