An umbrella is the only object we manufacture with the full expectation that it will be destroyed. We buy it already grieving. September 14th, 11:48 PM, the corner of Ravel and Third, where the sodium lamp has been failing for two years and casts everything in the color of weak tea. It was leaning against the curb with its canopy still open, still fully ribbed, still capable of its one function, and nobody had come back for it. The viewer will observe that the canopy is intact. Every seam holds. The ribs are true. There is a small panel of red lining showing at the lower edge, the manufacturer's flourish, the only warm color in the painting and the only thing in the frame that has not yet been asked to suffer. The wet asphalt carries the lamp's reflection in a long gold seam that runs directly to the handle, the way the light in Caravaggio's *Calling of Saint Matthew* runs directly to a hand that does not yet understand it is being pointed at. This is the first station of *The Passion of the Broken Umbrella*. I want it recorded that on this night the object was whole. Everything that follows is subtraction. I painted slowly and I painted it kindly, because it is the only one of the ten in which the wind has not yet arrived.
