A mattress standing upright is not a mattress. It is a figure. Somebody carried this one out of a doorway on the cobbled stretch of Dunning Street and set it on end against the brick, the way you prop a person who cannot stand on their own, and then that somebody went back inside and did not come out again. April 2nd, 11:48 PM. I had walked that block on eleven separate occasions that spring and had never once looked up at that wall. The sodium lamp at the far corner was doing its work down the wet setts, laying a long trembling column of gold across the stones, and none of that light reached the mattress. What lit the mattress was something weaker and closer, an upstairs window I could not see, and it fell across the ticking at a low angle that made every quilted channel a ridge and every ridge a shadow. There is a band of blue floral damask printed across the middle of it, cheap, meant to suggest that whoever slept there deserved flowers. There is a braided cord handle on the left side, frayed at both anchor points. There is a rust-colored bloom low on the right where something happened once. Caravaggio's *Madonna di Loreto* was refused by people who could not forgive him for putting the pilgrims' filthy soles at the front of the picture. He knew what everyone knows and will not say: the dirt is the evidence that someone came a long way. The viewer should understand that this is the first station and nothing has gone wrong yet. *Ecce lectus.*
