"The Last Lock": A Garabaggio Fine Art Print

November 9th, 2:26 AM. I returned to the bollard fourteen days later, because I had painted the wheel and not the lock, and the lock had begun to complain about it. The rust had come up through the vinyl sleeve in a single season, orange going brown going black, and the shackle had settled lower on the rim under its own weight. Two spokes had gone slack on the near side. The rest still held. I want to be precise about pigment here, because it matters. Caravaggio got his blacks from bitumen, which is to say tar, which is to say road. He scraped it, ground it, bound it in walnut oil, and that is why his shadows reach a depth no lamp black can manage. It never fully dries. Four hundred years on, those shadows are still soft under the varnish. A conservator once told me this was a defect. A shadow that has not finished drying is not a defect. It is a shadow that has not finished happening. The same is true of a rusting lock. It is still in the middle of its work. Nobody is coming for this bicycle; the lock does not know this, and would not change its behavior if it did. The viewer is asked to consider fidelity in the total absence of anyone to be faithful to.
