Oil on digital canvas, 2026. Post-Consumer Baroque series.

November 9th, 2:52 AM, and the bottom left coil was bare. One purchase. Somebody in this building was hungry at some hour between the fourteenth of October and now, and the machine gave up what it was holding, and the spiral turned once and stopped, and it has been standing open ever since like a mouth after a word. The viewer will find it in the lower left corner of the composition: a single steel helix with nothing inside it, catching the fluorescent tube in five bright rings down its length. I have painted a great deal of absence in my life. Absence in a dumpster is loud. Absence here is procedural. Nothing was lost. Something was correctly dispensed, and the machine performed the only sacrament it knows, and it is now one item lighter forever, because nobody is coming to refill it. I did not know that yet on the ninth of November. I suspected it. The sconce at the far end of the corridor was still lit and the tile floor still gave it back in that long broken column of orange, and I stood in front of the second station of these Nocturnes for forty minutes without once touching the glass.
