"The Escape Beneath the Fence": A Garabaggio Framed Print

October 9th, 2:20 AM, the service alley behind the laundromat on Ferndale, one block from where I first found it. I want to be precise about that distance, because the distance is the event. Something moved it. Wind, a boot, a raccoon with an interest in composition; I do not know, and I have stopped asking. What I found was the float pressed flat beneath the bottom rail of a chain-link fence, folded double, half its body on my side of the wire and half already through. The vinyl had gone slack. It no longer held the perfect circle of the first station. It held the shape of the gap it was passing through, which is a humbler thing to hold. In Caravaggio's *Taking of Christ* the lantern is carried by a man at the back who is not part of the drama and simply wants to see. That lantern is here as well, at the far end of the alley over a doorway, small and warm and entirely uninterested, laying its gold down the wet cobbles in a line that stops short of the subject by four feet. I measured. Four feet. The viewer will note that the float is not caught on the fence. It is under it. The fence did not stop it. The fence merely offered it a shape to pass through, and it accepted. *Sub ferro, fuga.*
