"The Entombment of the Garbage": A Garabaggio Framed Print

September 7th, 3:38 AM. The barrel had fallen, or been lowered, I am no longer certain it matters, and its contents had spilled across the pavement like offerings laid before an altar. Five of them, arranged in the half-circle that every painter since Raphael has understood as the composition of mourning. But they were not mourning. They were receiving. The one sitting upright, paws still, eyes fixed on something beyond the light: she was the witness. Every deposition requires one. In Caravaggio’s The Entombment of Christ, it is the woman with her arms raised to heaven while the others bear the weight. Here, the weight was a chicken carcass and half a bag of dinner rolls, and the bearers were four raccoons who handled it all with the solemnity of pallbearers. The viewer will notice that no one is rushing. There is no competition in this scene. The garbage has been laid to rest, and they have come to honor it. I painted the sentinel last, because she did not move for the entire session. Forty minutes. Still as a saint in a niche. I have never had a more patient model.
