October 11th, 3:33 AM. Something had run over it. Not a truck, I think; the damage is too local for a truck. A tire had taken the near corner of the rim and pressed it flat and outward, and the long wall had buckled inward in that smooth curve plastic makes when it is bent past its memory and cannot come back. The right handle has been pushed out of its socket and now stands away from the body at an angle no molder ever drew. The lacing held. That is the detail of the seventh station, and I would like the viewer to stand in front of the canvas long enough to find it: everything the manufacturer built has failed, and the forty cents of blue cord a stranger added in May is the only part still doing its job. The streetlamp is behind and to the left, putting one band of light down the wet step. It lays the crushed lattice out on the stone as a shadow that no longer matches the object casting it. A broken thing throws a broken diagram.
