Rain had been falling for nine hours by the time I set up, and the alley behind Kessler Street had become a shallow black river running toward a drain it would never reach. The third station of the lamentations finds the float much diminished. It lies almost level in two inches of moving water, a soft grey-green loop with one shoulder still raised, the printed suns nearly gone from its flank. The only lamp is at the far end, over a doorway, perhaps two hundred feet off. Caravaggio's *Rest on the Flight into Egypt* gives most of its canvas to the journey and almost none to the arrival, and I have always taken that as instruction. So here: nine tenths of the painting is wet brick and wet stone and the long gold thread of that distant lamp lying on the water. The float occupies the lower left. It is crossing. It is not being carried. Nobody is carrying it. I stood under the fire escape for two hours and it moved perhaps the width of my hand.
