The lamp is off. That is the entire subject of the third station. Nothing has been done to the toaster since the second painting: same bench, same position, same slice standing in the same slot, tray still pulled. The only change in the world is that the person who was examining it went upstairs and did not come back down. A little grey comes off a basement window at the left. A little amber leaks from a hallway at the right. Neither of them reaches the object, and yet the object is perfectly visible, which is a trick I learned standing in front of *The Calling of Saint Matthew* in Madrid, in a side chapel so poorly lit that the painting has to supply its own morning. Steel gives heat back slowly. There is a stretch of an hour or two in which a machine that has been switched off is still, technically, warm. That hour is what I painted. *Frigus post officium.*
