"The Burden of Wet Clothes": A Garabaggio Fine Art Print

Wet cotton is the heaviest cargo a household produces and nobody has ever said so out loud. The second station, painted in the same basement on April 19th at 1:20 in the morning, shows the basket loaded well past its designed capacity: a full machine of dark laundry mounded above the rim like a burial mound, water still leaving it, running down the outside of the lattice in six separate threads. The floor beneath had gone to mirror. The bulb repeated itself in the standing water. I stood in that water in my socks for two hours and did not notice until later. Caravaggio's *Entombment of Christ* works because everyone in it is holding weight and nobody is pretending otherwise. Every figure is braced. Every hand has a job. That is what a loaded basket does with its own walls: it braces. The sides bow outward, and the split from the first station widens by an amount I measured with a strip of paper and will not disclose, because the number sounds small and it was not small. The mitten is still in its diamond, soaked now, darker, hanging like a bell that will not ring. The viewer should notice that the basket is not complaining. It has been given far more than it was built for, and it is holding.
