Inside, there was no light. I record this plainly, because the whole series has been an argument that light gets into everything, and it does not get in here. What came out of the cells was a shallow dish of black granular powder, dry, faintly warm to the hand, the colour of the space behind a stove. It occupies the upper half of the painting in a plain steel dish and it absorbs every lamp I aimed at it, which I attempted for two nights before accepting the result. Below the dish: one curl of stripped casing, one pressed black disc, a small heap of rolled metal. At the top edge of the frame the last three whole cells wait, still dressed, not yet aware. Rubens painted a philosopher sitting in a dark room with a single window, or it may have been Rembrandt; the monograph I own was printed badly and one caption sits beneath the wrong plate. Either way the point survives. The dark portion of that canvas is not empty. It is where everything is being kept. The viewer will spend most of their time in this painting looking into the powder and will find nothing there, and that is the correct outcome. This is the eighth station. Not everything opens into radiance. Some things open into what they were made of. *Pulvis in patina.*
