"The Bend from Impact": A Garabaggio Fine Art Print

It rained for three days and then the plows came through, and on the fourth morning the wheel was no longer round. December 14th, 5:02 AM, in the middle of Delacroix, forty feet from the bollard. Something had taken it off the post entirely, lock and all, and pressed it flat into the asphalt with enough force to fold the rim into a long oval with a soft dent in one flank. There is a word for this among people who ride. I will not use it. This is the third station and it deserves better vocabulary. The rim now describes a shape nearer a kidney than a circle, and the spokes that once ran straight from hub to rim sag in slack curves, five of them detached at the nipple and curling loose across the void like drawn thread. The reflector survived. It always survives. The lamp stood behind me and to the left, and its reflection sat on the wet street in a single upright column of gold, the only vertical thing in a painting that is otherwise entirely horizontal. Caravaggio's *Conversion on the Way to Damascus* is not a picture about a man being struck down. It is a picture about a horse standing very still while something enormous happens underneath it. The light is the event. The falling is incidental. I painted the asphalt for two weeks before I touched the wheel. There is more information in a wet road at five in the morning than in most faces.
