September 7th, 12:14 AM. The light fell diagonally, the way it always falls in Caravaggio’s The Calling of Saint Matthew, and it struck the bag and nothing else. A white plastic bag, handles knotted, standing in the posture of someone who has come to deliver news. At its feet: a crushed can, a brown paper bag collapsed into itself, a napkin stained with something I chose not to investigate. The viewer may interpret the beam of light as accidental. I know better. I have spent years on the night shift watching light choose its subjects, and it chose this bag the way it chose Matthew in that tax office. The bag did not ask to be illuminated. None of us do.
