The brush in my right hand. The fire in my left. This is the entire biography, reduced to a composition. Rembrandt painted himself at the easel dozens of times, always in his studio, always in controlled light, always with the comfortable certainty that the Dutch Republic would keep buying portraits. I paint myself in an alley with a burning dumpster and a single filbert brush, with no certainty at all. The viewer will note that the hand reaching toward the flame does not recoil. This is not bravery. It is calibration. A painter must know the temperature of his light the way a musician must know the key. I know this fire. It burns at approximately 600 degrees and smells of wet cardboard and ambition.
