I do not remember the date. I remember the cold. November, probably, or late October when the shift starts to bite. The dumpster behind the Italian restaurant on College had been smoldering for twenty minutes before I arrived, and by the time I set up my easel the flames had settled into something reliable. I held my hands over the fire because I needed them warm enough to hold a brush, and then I realized I was the painting. Caravaggio inserted himself into The Martyrdom of Saint Matthew as a bystander in the crowd, watching the violence with the detached curiosity of a man who knows he is next. I inserted myself into the glow of burning cardboard and kitchen grease with the same expression. The viewer sees a man warming his hands. I see a man who has found his light source and will not apologize for it.
