Every fire ends. I have known this since the first night I painted by one, and I know it now, standing in the last light of a dumpster that has given me everything it had. The flames are lower in this portrait than in any of the others. The shadows are longer. The hand on my chest is quieter. Caravaggio spent his final years painting in the dark, literally and otherwise, and his late works have a stillness that his Roman bravado never achieved. I am not comparing myself to Caravaggio. I am comparing this fire to his. Both were dying. Both were still, in the final hour, producing the best light of their lives. The viewer will notice that I am not looking at the flames. I am looking at you. The fire knows what it is doing. It does not need my attention. You, perhaps, do.
