November 9th, 6:52 AM, the loading bay behind the produce terminal at the end of Whitcomb Road, where the concrete stays wet for three days after any rain because nothing there is graded properly. I found a tarp folded against the wall. Sixteen feet of it, blue, with a tear near its middle that I closed that same morning with a square of tan canvas and waxed thread. I had passed that bay on eleven separate mornings without seeing it. This is the first station of The Procession of Blue Tarps, and it is the only one in which the material is still obedient. I bound it upright with sisal at five heights and set it on a steel plate so that it would stand without a body inside it. It stood. That was the whole of the work that morning: it stood, and it held the shape of standing. The viewer will notice that the rope does not tighten the form. It marks it. Five knots at five heights, the way a standard is dressed before it is carried. Caravaggio understood that a vertical is a claim. The Flagellation puts the column dead centre and lets everything else fall away from it, and I have not been able to look at a post or a pole or a bound thing since without hearing that column. There was no sun. The brick behind it was the colour of old brick and the sky gave nothing at all. Blue does not need sun. Blue is its own announcement. *Signum erectum.*
