There was a break in the cloud at 5:12 in the afternoon on February 3rd, perhaps forty seconds of it, and everything I have to show for that winter happened inside those forty seconds. I had rigged a cable between two salvaged steel posts across the flooded lot and hung three panels from it on clips, and the gale that came through the night before had done what gales do. The left panel was torn along its trailing edge. The right one had lost most of its lower corner and was streaming. All three had frozen into the meltwater at their feet, so the wind could take the tops and not the bottoms, and the result is a row of figures that lean and cannot leave. This is the seventh station. The viewer will observe that they hang from hooks and not from knots; I had stopped tying things by then. The storm light behind them is the only light in the entire procession I did not have to wait for. It arrived, it was extravagant, and it left. The centre panel still carries the patch, unharmed, while everything around it tore. *Ventus tulit, signum mansit.*
