"After the Last Swim": A Garabaggio Fine Art Print

It was still holding air when I found it. That is the first thing the viewer must understand about the opening station of Lamentations for a Deflated Pool Float: nothing has happened yet. September 28th, 11:40 PM, the lower level of the parking structure on Ferndale where the floor drain runs and the concrete never dries. A ring float, seafoam vinyl, printed with small orange suns in the manner of a cheap devotional pattern. The valve stands upright near the front like an eye that has not closed. Below it, in the mold seam, there is a curve the manufacturer put there for no reason I can determine, and it reads as a smile. I did not add it. I would not dare. A yellow warning patch sits on the flank, its printing worn down to a single gold rectangle, which is what happens to all instructions eventually. Caravaggio's *Basket of Fruit* is celebrated for the apple with the worm hole and the leaves already curling, painted at the exact hour the fruit stopped being food and became a subject. This float has just crossed that hour. The pool is drained. The season is closed. It is holding air out of habit. I painted the wet floor first, because the only light in the room was borrowed from a bulb outside the frame, and it lay along the concrete in a long gold ribbon that never touches the float at all.
