I painted the base and nothing else: no horizon, no lamp, no road, only the rubber foot filling the canvas edge to edge, with a single patch of lit gravel at the left where a streetlight managed to land. The split runs from the outer corner inward toward the column and then turns, the way splits turn when they meet something they cannot pass through, and the two halves have parted by perhaps four millimetres. Four millimetres is enough. A cone that cannot sit flat cannot stand in wind, and a cone that cannot stand in wind is no longer municipal property. It is debris, which is a legal category before it is a physical one. Caravaggio set a basket of fruit on a ledge and painted the wormhole in the apple and the leaf curling into brown, and for four hundred years people have called it a still life when it is plainly a portrait of the moment a thing stops being able to do its job.
