I have painted a great deal of absence in my life. Absence in a dumpster is loud. Absence here is procedural. Nothing was lost. Something was correctly dispensed, and the machine performed the only sacrament it knows, and it is now one item lighter forever, because nobody is coming to refill it. I did not know that yet on the ninth of November. I suspected it.
