Two hands, rising from the wreckage of a paper bag, reaching toward a bottle and a crushed can the way the Virgin reaches toward heaven in every Assumption ever painted. Caravaggio never painted an Assumption, but if he had, the hands would have looked like this: not serene, not composed, but grasping. Desperate. The viewer will note the bottle is almost empty. The can is open and drained. What remains is the gesture itself, preserved in the amber light of a street lamp that had no idea it was providing gallery illumination. I have never painted hands with more conviction. They were not mine.
