I was not there, and I want that stated plainly at the opening of this series, because everything that follows depends on the viewer trusting me later. I reconstructed this morning from the evidence, and the evidence was generous. The scorch on the right flank of the housing is a crescent, and a crescent is a shape that only comes from repetition: the same hand, the same angle, the same wall behind, year after year, until the chrome gave up defending itself. The crumbs on the counter are old. The cord is out of the wall and lying in a loose curve, and the toast is standing in the slot, black through, untouched. Someone pulled the plug and walked away from the bread. That is the whole event. Under the cabinet, one small fixture does all the work, and it does it the way the lamp does in Caravaggio's *Saint Jerome Writing*: not to flatter the subject, but to interrogate it. The sink is behind, in the dark, and I left it there. The viewer will want to look at the toast. I ask instead that the viewer look at the crescent, which is the oldest thing in the painting and the only part of this object that was made by being used. This is the first station of the testament. The bread is finished.
