A ring float, seafoam vinyl, printed with small orange suns in the manner of a cheap devotional pattern. The valve stands upright near the front like an eye that has not closed. Below it, in the mold seam, there is a curve the manufacturer put there for no reason I can determine, and it reads as a smile. I did not add it. I would not dare. A yellow warning patch sits on the flank, its printing worn down to a single gold rectangle, which is what happens to all instructions eventually. Caravaggio's *Basket of Fruit* is celebrated for the apple with the worm hole and the leaves already curling, painted at the exact hour the fruit stopped being food and became a subject. This float has just crossed that hour. The pool is drained. The season is closed. It is holding air out of habit.
