I had walked past this machine for eleven years and never once looked at it. That is the confession with which this series begins. The fluorescent tube above the top shelf is the only honest light source in the corridor, and it falls the way light falls in Caravaggio's *Calling of Saint Matthew*: from above and to the left, indifferent to who deserves it, striking the merchandise and leaving the floor to fend for itself. The viewer should attend to the colours. Ochre, slate, bruised violet, a green the shade of an old bottle. No two packages agree with one another. Post-Consumer Baroque series.

It did not fall. That is the whole of the fifth station and it took me eleven nights to paint. January 22nd, 4:06 AM: second shelf, third coil, a slate blue package pushed forward by the spiral until it stood past the point of any reasonable balance and then stopped, wedged against the wire, hanging out over a drop of nothing at roughly forty degrees. Below it, three shelves entirely bare. Above it, two packages left on the top row, a rust red one at the far left and a pale gold one at the far right, set as far apart as the shelf allows, the way mourners sit in a large church. Somebody paid for the blue one. The machine took the money, turned the coil, and then held on. I know what the viewer is thinking, and yes, a shake would free it. But consider what is actually depicted here: an object in the exact instant before a fall that never comes, held by a mechanism built for no purpose other than letting go. Caravaggio spent his life on that instant. The *Supper at Emmaus* is a painting of a man leaning back half a second before he understands. The hand is still in the air. Nothing has landed yet. I have painted a packet of crisps in a service corridor on Ninth Street and I am telling the viewer it is the same instant. I am not joking. They wheeled it out through the freight door and left it against the wall beside the roller shutter, facing the yard, and there it has stood for two weeks with its cord still trailing across the asphalt and the plug still lying where it fell. The crack in the lower right of the glass, which was the size of a thumbnail in October, is now a full star: twelve radiating lines and four concentric rings, a rose window, drawn by frost and one careless dolly wheel. The single gooseneck lamp on the dock wall throws a warm and grudging light from the left, catches the wet edge of the concrete lip, and abandons everything else to the weather. Rain is running down the face of the glass in the same vertical threads the condensation made in February, which the viewer may take as a rhyme, because I intended it as one. Inside, on the second shelf, the blue package is still hanging at its angle. Nine stations. It has not fallen yet.

Premium black frame with white mat and acrylic glazing

Giclée printed on acid-free, gallery-grade 220 gsm paper

REACH-certified inks, sustainably sourced woodstock

Ships worldwide via Printify fulfillment

Oil on digital canvas, 2026.
